Rowling的全球性慈善组织Lumos，该组织致力于终结制度化、企业化的儿童收容机构，让数百万生活在孤儿院和世界各地其他机构的儿童与家人团聚或将他们送到寄养家庭，使他们重新获得家庭生活的权利。该纪录片讲述了由于各种原因而被迫与家庭分离的孤儿们的生活，其中一些孩子因为社会和政治因素而进入收容机构，或是因为自然灾害而成为孤儿，或是因为贫穷或疾病无法得到家庭照顾。。
